Part 121Operating Requirements: Domestic, Flag, and Supplemental Operations

14 CFR 121.377 — Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance Training Program

Requires airlines to establish and maintain an FAA-approved training program for all maintenance and preventive maintenance personnel.

Regulation Text

Each certificate holder shall establish and maintain an FAA-approved maintenance training program that provides instruction sufficient to ensure that each person performing maintenance, preventive maintenance, or alterations is competent to perform assigned duties.

Note: This is an excerpt. Refer to the full regulation in eCFR for the complete text.

Plain-English Explanation

Airlines must have FAA-approved training programs for all maintenance personnel. This goes beyond having A&P certificates — mechanics must receive airline-specific training on the aircraft types they maintain, company procedures, and human factors. Initial and recurrent training is required. This regulation reflects the complexity of airline maintenance operations where a single error can affect hundreds of passengers.
